    Good to know

Good to know before you come to Matera

A few things worth knowing before you arrive.

    • Start with a guided tour or a museum. We wanted to simply lose ourselves in the Sassi with no explanations, then we changed our mind, and we're glad we did. Without a bit of history, you don't really grasp Matera's charm.

    • If you can, stay at least two nights. Matera by day and Matera between sunset and evening are two different cities, one night alone isn't enough to see them both.

    • Give yourself time to arrive. The city has grown around the historic Sassi, so when you first arrive you may find yourself in the newer part of town. Keep following your maps and the old town will appear.

    • Choose your accommodation carefully. The Sassi are full of steps, if you're travelling with heavy luggage, pick lodging that's easy to reach, or pack light.

    • Coming by car from the coast? From Polignano or Monopoli it's an easy drive with a rental, just allow a little extra time, the roads near Matera have their own rhythm.

    • Step into the churches. The rock churches and the ones hidden among the Sassi's alleys are where Matera still manages to surprise you.

    • Step into the artisan workshops and let them tell you their stories: it's one of the best ways to get to know the city's traditions and history.

    • After you've seen the sights, let yourself get lost. Put the map away for a couple of hours — that's exactly when you'll find the most beautiful corners.

    • Bring a layer for the evening. Even in spring, once the sun sets the air turns cool and breezy. A light jacket makes the evening more comfortable.

    • Dinner starts late. Many kitchens open around 7:30 pm, so plan your evening accordingly.

    • Don't leave the Sassi right after dinner. After 8:30 pm, stop for an aperitivo on a terrace — that's when you'll see the Sassi's "nativity scene" of lights appear, a sight not to be missed.

    • Watch the sunset from the Cattedrale. The terrace beside the Cathedral is the finest spot to see the sun go down and the city slowly light up. Arrive a little early to find your place.

    • See Matera from across the ravine. The Belvedere di Murgia Timone gives you the full postcard view of the Sassi. Two ways to reach it:

      • By car: head toward Taranto / Laterza and drive to Jazzo Gattini, the park visitor centre. Pay the park entry, then it's about a 1 km walk to the viewpoint.
      • On foot: pick up a ticket at Porta Pistola, descend into the gravina and climb up the other side.

    Walking the Sassi

The stone alleys are beautiful but demanding — a little preparation goes a long way.

    • Dress comfortably, as you would for a hike.
    • Wear trainers or trekking shoes: the cobblestones of the Sassi are stunning, but uneven.
    • Always carry a water bottle, water is precious here, especially in the sun.
    • Bring a hat and sunglasses: the stone reflects a lot of light.
    • Remember the "up-and-down" trick: if you lose your way, walk down to the main road that winds through the Sassi, then climb back up.
    • Take shade breaks whenever you can, a low wall, a step, a bench. Any excuse is a good one.
