Radici e geografie della memoria
Organized by MIP - Matera International Photography

Description
The exhibition "Roots and Geographies of Memory," the sixth event of MIPphest2026 Fluid Horizons, the 10th International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts, is a poetic and conceptual investigation of the original relationship between humans, nature, and the memory of places. This exploration is presented through a body of paintings and graphics that explore the symbolic dimension of the Lucanian landscape, and in particular, the Matera area. In this context, Mariarosaria Cinnella's work unfolds as a reflection on landscape, understood not as a simple backdrop, but as a living organism, a repository of historical, cultural, and anthropological layers.
Through a language that intertwines sign, material, and vision, the artist constructs a journey through the depths of time, restoring the landscape to its original nature as a sensitive and dynamic archive. The works are configured as places where memory emerges, where the human figure takes on an archetypal value, becoming an essential and symbolic presence, linked to the cycles of nature and the persistence of the primary gestures of habitation.
The exhibition project is part of a long-standing artistic research that has explored the relationships between image, memory, and the identity of places. Cinnella's work is distinguished by an approach that straddles painting and graphic design, in which the sign becomes a memory trace and the pictorial surface transforms into a space for emotional and cultural sedimentation. The result is a practice that approaches the dimension of the "archaeology of the gaze," where each image is the result of a tension between the visible and the invisible, between what persists and what dissolves.
