Description
Tales in Stone – Museum of Paleontology and Geology Carved into the living rock of the Sasso Caveoso in Matera, the Tales in Stone museum is an extraordinary journey through millions of years of geological and natural history of the Murgia and Matera area. In a fascinating underground environment created by private individuals, fossils speak: prehistoric creatures imprinted in the tuff, dinosaur remains, and footprints of beings long gone. Among the most impressive finds is the reproduction of the skeleton of the "Giuliana" whale, found in 2006 on the banks of the San Giuliano dam, a few kilometers from Matera—an extraordinary testament to when these lands were once the seabed. The visit is enhanced by interactive technologies—3D plastic floors, models, and audio guides—making the experience engaging for all ages, both adults and children.
