The cave complex of Madonna delle Virtù and San Nicola dei Greci is among the main attractions of the Sassi di Matera. The structure, entirely carved into the limestone rock and an example of negative architecture, consists of the two churches of Madonna delle Virtù and San Nicola dei Greci, a monastery, cave dwellings, and cellars. All the spaces are connected by passageways and stairways, following a complex path that leads up to a viewpoint overlooking the Gravina stream and the Murgia. Entirely carved into the tuff, the cave complex today hosts prestigious contemporary art exhibitions.
