Description
The MOOM – Matera Oil Museum is located in the Sassi di Matera, in an ancient rock-cut olive oil mill at Vico 1° Casalnuovo. Dating back to the 15th–16th centuries, the original structure was entirely excavated from the tuff rock and was expanded over time to accommodate technological advances and increased production. The excavated material was often reused, and the rock served as structural support for equipment, warehouses, and cisterns. The upper part of the building was constructed between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Located on Via Casalnuovo, one of the few roads accessible to vehicles in the Sassi, the mill was once in a peripheral area, suited to the activities linked to the rural tradition that has always characterized the city. Today, the area is centrally located and located on the main tourist routes. Visits are by reservation, calling +39 380 7015042.
