Details
The Museo del Pane in Matera is a small museum dedicated to the history and tradition of Matera’s bread, located in the heart of the Sassi of Matera. It is housed in a well-preserved 15th-century communal oven and tells the story of how bread was produced and consumed in the daily life of local families. The visit offers an authentic insight into local rural culture, displaying original tools, photographs, and stories about traditional bread-making, the use of natural sourdough, and the wooden stamps used to identify each family’s bread before baking. The museum highlights the symbolic value of bread as an element of identity, community, and collective memory for the city of the Sassi.
