Description
Eddie Gomez
Born on October 4, 1944, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Eddie Gomez is one of the most brilliant double bass players in the history of jazz. A great virtuoso of his instrument, his flexibility and quick interaction made him an ideal accompanist. Raised in New York, he began studying double bass at the age of eleven, gaining admission to the High School of Music at thirteen, and soon afterward began studying with Fred Zimmerman. He was a member of the Newport Festival Youth Band from 1959 to 1961. After studying at Juilliard, where Chick Corea, Hubert Laws, James Levine, Itzak Perlman, Paula Robinson, and Gary Karr also studied, Gomez played with, among others, Gary McFarland, Gerry Mulligan, Benny Goodman, Buck Clayton, the Rufus Jones Sextet, Marian McPartland (1964), Paul Bley (1964–65), and Giuseppi Logan. Eddie Gomez rose to international fame during his long tenure with the Bill Evans Trio, with whom he collaborated from 1966 to 1977. He appeared on numerous important recordings by the great pianist, two of which won Grammy Awards, and began to stand out for his distinctive, musical virtuosity, which would become a hallmark of his style. In the late 1960s, he played several times in the famous Miles Davis Quintet, which included Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Tony Williams. Gomez has since collaborated with a wide variety of groups, including Steps Ahead (1979–84), Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, George Benson, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Hank Jones, Nancy Wilson, Tania Maria, and Ray Barretto, as well as on numerous recordings. In classical music, Gomez has been a guest soloist with the Tashi Ensemble, the Kronos Quartet, and clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, and premiered a composition written especially for him by Thomas McKinley at Carnegie Recital Hall. Eddie Gomez has also recorded as a leader for the Columbia, ProJazz, and Stretch labels.
